One of far north Queensland’s most significant events has been revitalised, with the race now starting in Chillagoe and finishing in Mareeba.
After 13 years, Committee Chair Nipper Brown said it was time to ‘bring the gold home’ to Mareeba.
“After careful consideration and community consultation with key stakeholders, the decision was made to revive and refresh the signature event,” he said.
The charity event remains a three day, fun-filled endurance event and will take place May 19-21 2017. Competitors will start the 144km journey in Chillagoe on Friday morning and arrive back to Mareeba Sunday afternoon.
Categories include teams (female, male or mixed) of up to ten people, Solo and Duo competitors, Over 35’s and Over 55’s, School Students, Services (Police, SES, Defence Forces, etc.) Mixed and a Social Category, which attracted several, teams last year.
Cr Brown said the committee was looking forward to the event and urged those interested in competing to get their nominations in early.
Last year, competitors raised a total of $200,000 for a range of charities, including FNQ Cerebral Palsy, the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Mareeba Animal Refuge, the Brest Cancer Foundation and the Mareeba Hospital.
“Some teams go to remarkable lengths to raise money for their nominated charity during the lead-up to the race,” Cr Brown said.
Race enthusiasts are encouraged to keep an eye on the event’s website and Facebook page for exciting updates.
Nominations close on 1 May 2017.
